Consult
Referral of a patient by the primary care physician to another hospital service/specialty, to obtain a medical opinion based on patient evaluation and completion of any procedures, modalities, or treatments the consulting specialist deems necessary to render a medical opinion. For instance, if a primary care physician orders a patient evaluation from Cardiology Service, and the cardiology specialist orders an Electrocardiogram (EKG) to complete the evaluation and provide an opinion concerning the patient’s condition, this type of order is considered a “Consult.”
