Ubuntu Server Edition is one of the most widely deployed server platforms worldwide, as is the Ubuntu Desktop version. Current versions of Ubuntu allow both server and desktop packages to be installed interchangeably. Ubuntu is a derivative of the Debian Linux operating system. Many users prefer a variation called Kubuntu.

Ubuntu has an efficient version of its server OS specifically tuned for use in virtual machines. Previously known as JeOS ("Just Enough Operating System"), it is now known merely as the "virtual machine minimal installation" for the Ubuntu Server.

There are many guides and manuals available for Ubuntu.
